NY EYE & EAR FEST II - JULY 9 - 12, 2009! Tickets on Sale Now!

    4 DAYS - 3 VENUES - 2 BOROUGHS
Knitting Factory & 92Y Tribeca in Manhattan & Death By Audio in Brooklyn

Pendu presents: NY Eye & Ear Fest II ... a massive 4-day New Music and Arts Fete showcasing some of the most exciting bands, artists, and filmmakers currently living and working here in NYC. In addition, NYE&E assembles a Record Fair featuring NYC-based Record Labels and Vendors selling LPs, CDs, 7''s, cassettes, lathes, comics, zines, stickers, and art prints. The title of the fest is inspired from the 1964 NY Eye & Ear Control soundtrack by Albert Ayler as well as the all-too-familiar signs seen daily in the subway tunnels by riders of the L-train of the infamous NY Eye & Ear Infirmary. If you don't know all of the names in the lineup, don't be alarmed; NYE&E exists to facilitate the introduction of new artists placing them side-by-side with the more well-known like an eclectic living mixtape of sound and vision. This is a festival for discovery - discover new bands + discover new art + buy new records + meet new people... The festival prices are low to make them affordable in these difficult financial times, so please show your support and buy your tickets now...!

The NY EYE & EAR FESTIVAL has been praised by the Village Voice as being "a first of its kind" and Arthur Magazine describes it as "a giant, swarming, lovingly handpicked showcase of grassroots cultural production in New York".

The inaugural NY Eye & Ear Festival in December 2008 was an incredible success! A big thanks goes out to everyone who attended (especially those who bought records). Thanks goes out to all of the amazing music that is being packaged and created here in New York… Cheers to all the bands and labels who participated. In some ways this seemed an impossible feat to accomplish. 13 bands played on the first day and then a nearly unheard of 23 bands the next? On top of that, 39 NY record labels were represented together in the same room as the bands (which made for a tight fit). Well it happened. It worked, and more than that, it was AWESOME! Hope you come out to the next one in July. Bigger and better, onward and on.

NYE&E is curated by Todd Pendu of the Pendu Organization, a nonprofit arts and cultural organization based in Brooklyn, NY. *Email NYE&E: info(at)pendu.org

COLD CINEMA: FILMS BY LIZ WENDELBO
‘Opticks I – XIV’ 2009, 3 minutes x 14, 16mm, color and bw, sound. Editing by Taylor Thompson; performances by Brandi Hudson, Elissa Santiago; music by Sean McBride (Martial Canterel / Xeno & Oaklander) Total running time: ca. 50 minutes

Born in the dark era that is the new millennium in New York, the ‘cold cinema’ of Liz Wendelbo is a return to analogue film. Originating from the NY Minimal Electronics music scene (Xeno & Oaklander), Liz Wendelbo engages in a form of filmmaking that predicates resistance to cinema as a virtual medium. Her latest work is a series of short three-minute films entitled ‘Opticks’. Her films explore themes of darkness, rituals, Goth iconography and film as a medium, with melancholy and restraint. With a fondness for obsolete technology, she uses 16mm and double 8 as her shooting medium of choice, in color and black and white. ‘Opticks’ is structured in a modular way: the short films are numbered one through fourteen and are interchangeable. Three sections surface overall – the abstract optical experiments of the ‘Maxwell Tartan Ribbon’ series (A 19th century Scottish physicist, Maxwell ‘projected’ the first color photograph using Newton’s color theory in 1861 – the image was a tartan ribbon); the dance and movement based Goth ‘Rituals’ series; and the ‘film-as-historical document’ framework of World War II, industrial and personal found footage of the ‘Excavation’ and ‘Columns’ series.

Brooklyn based artist Liz Wendelbo is a founding member of the band ‘Xeno & Oaklander’. Group shows include W139, Amsterdam; Elizabeth Dee Gallery, NY; and White Columns, NY. Solo projects include ‘Zurück’, Foundation 20/21 at NYEHAUS, New York (2005); and a screening ‘Cold Cinema’ at New York’s Anthology Film Archives.

    Artist website: http://lizwendelbo.com
    Rachel Blackwell
    Films:
-Meditations on Death- approximately 8 minutes
    -Yes! Witches - 5 minutes
-Death For Sale- variable, 17 minute loop

A Live Score will be provided by Dirty Churches

Rachel R. Blackwell is a video and collage artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Rachel Blackwell is presenting three videos at the NY Eye & Ear Fest. First is Meditations on Death, which is a survey of symbolic associations of death. Yes! Witches is an exploration of the mysterious allure of the witch. Death For Sale is a piece created in response to the Iraq war in 2003.

All three videos will be screened with a live score composed by Jesse Gelaznik and performed by Dirty Churches. Dirty Churches is a sound-art collective from Brooklyn that has been conducting experiments based on Black Swan theory and surgical sonic terror in and around NYC since 2003.
